Job Opening: Sexton (F-T)

Position Summary:

Title: Sexton 

Hours per week: Full-Time (40 hours/week; Saturday and Sunday hours required; position may be filled by a team of two)

Position available: (November 1, 2023 or asap thereafter)

Job Compensation: $34,000 to $40,000 depending on qualifications, plus on-site housing and utilities; 3 weeks paid vacation.

The Role of Sexton

 

  • Support for the worship and ministry life of the church (with focus on Sunday and holiday activities): e.g., set/reset worship space (prayer pit candles, hymn boards, holiday decorations); set/reset furnishings in undercroft, auditorium, lounge, choir room, 3rd floor as requested.

  • Custodial: Clean entire church building interior on regular schedule to maintain professional standard of cleanliness; monitor the exterior of property for waste and remove; schedule deep cleanings 3-4 times a year.

  • Maintenance: Complete basic plumbing, hardware, carpentry, electrical, change light bulbs etc. repairs as requested; engage with vendors as requested by Property Committee; check systems (e.g., boiler, HVAC, plumbing, electrical etc.) and notify property committee and staff of needed repairs to troubleshoot and schedule.

  • Exterior Care: monitoring of exterior, waste management, snow removal, and salt on walkways/steps around church buildings.

  • Support for external groups: As needed/negotiated per space use agreement: may include set up, opening, break down, waste removal, closing.  

  • Security: ensure alarm system is turned on and off every day; monitor campus interior and exterior for presence of unauthorized persons; provide “soft security” through campus presence on Sunday mornings

  • Support staff with projects as requested: e.g., hanging banners, assembling furnishings, moving items/boxes to and from storage, etc.

Qualifications:

 

  • Previous job-related experience, advantageous

  • Physical dexterity – ability to stand, stretch, pull, bend, kneel.

  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs

  • Working knowledge of building systems, maintenance, and basic repairs

  • Must be able to climb ladders

  • Must be willing and able to obtain any certificates needed for job (e.g., FDNY Fitness to supervise use of fire alarm and other related systems)

  • Organized: able to order and organize supplies, maintain inspection and property records, etc.

  • Friendly, collaborative, good communication skills

  • Ability to multitask and to work independently
