About The Event
Mardi Gras, traditionally celebrated the Tuesday evening before Ash Wednesday, comes early to Staten Island this year.
Saturday, February 10, at 5 pm, Trinity Lutheran Church on the north shore of Staten Island celebrates Mardi Gras with a Jazz Vespers featuring the New Orleans-influenced sounds of trumpeter Danny Tobias headlining an extraordinary quartet of New York jazz leaders.
Trinity’s occasional Jazz Vespers series welcomes Danny Tobias who well-known for his artful, vibrant interpretations of classic and swing jazz titles. He is joined by internationally-known Grammy-winning pianist Conal Fowkes who is heralded for his dynamic and witty artistry at the keyboard. Brian Nalepka, known for his rhythmic ragtime and swing virtuosity, adds his versatility and joy on bass. Traditional jazz drummer Kevin Dorn rounds out the quartet with his sensitive, inspiring syncopation.
The Trinity Jazz Vespers, a jazz concert interwoven with brief reflections and interfaith prayers, is led by Trinity’s new pastor, the Rev. Dr. Stephanie Jaeger. Pastor Stephanie launched the occasional Jazz Vespers series at Trinity four months ago because of her love for jazz and her belief that churches should be centers in the community for art, justice, and community. “Trinity is a church for the whole community and our community is multicultural. Jazz is an artform that draws diverse people together. Trinity’s 110-year-old, cathedral-like sanctuary is an ideal space for jazz, and for being woven together in creative solidarity by the power and inspiration of the vibrant music.”
Jazz Vespers at Trinity are open to the public. No tickets are required. Donations to offset the cost of the artists are welcome. The Jazz Vespers on Sat., Feb. 10 will be followed by a Mardi Gras pancake supper.
