Trinity Minis: The Ignatius Sancho Chamber Players

THE IGNATIUS SANCHO CHAMBER PLAYERS

Dr. Jessica Valiente is a flutist, recorderist, bandleader, and scholar. A conservatory-trained classical musician with an interest in early music, her career ultimately led her to jazz improvisation, Latin music, and performance in a variety of global styles. She specializes in Cuban charanga, Brazilian choro, Latin jazz, and straight-ahead jazz. She performs on a variety of traditional flutes, particularly Native American flutes and Andean flutes. Early music and historical performance practice continues to be part of her career in performances on recorders, traverso, and other historical flutes.

After performing and recording pieces attributed to Sawney Freeman (an 18th-century free person of color who may have been America's first Black composer), she was approached by a colleague and member of Bronx Arts Ensemble about performing these pieces again with her and some of her associates. Together they devised a program that includes these 12 pieces (about 20 minutes of music), minuets and dances by Ignatius Sancho* and perhaps one or two string quartets by Chevalier de Saint-Georges to create a program of music by 18th-century black composers.
